An audit of KEMA was started in March with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism after accounting problems were discovered. In early April an accounting committee consisting of 8 people was commissioned to audit the organization, as a result of which the embezzlement of hundreds of millions of won was discovered.
The amazing fact is that even though the association was established in 2007, this was the first time in seven years there was an audit. Since it was started in 2007 and until 2010, there has been no proper accounting. The association was funded by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, Korea Tourism Organization, the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), Daejeon, and it also received public funds from Jinju Drama Festival, the Busan International Film Festival, Asian Pacific Actors Network (APAN) and various other events. But there has been no transparency at all in its management of funds.
It all began in the spring of 2005 with the so-called “X files” in the entertainment world and KEMA was launched after the incident in May 2007. At the time, it started with 44 member companies, and it currently has 204 member companies as of August 2013. Most of the major management companies belong to KEMA, such as Namoo Actors, Key East, Fantagio, IHQ, etc., and it now holds sway over 1,100 performers/entertainers.
In the meantime, KEMA investigated actors Kang Ji Hwan and Jo Yeo Jung and intervened in the showbiz comeback of Park Si Hoo, recommending him ”to refrain from entertainment activities”. But rather than protecting the interests and rights of actors, some officers lined their own pockets and the association will come under criticism. In particular, if this embezzlement case turns out to be true, it will be a serious blow to the Association to justify itself in the future.
